The Estate

History

Manoir de Plaisance was built in 1860 as a simple maison de maître, originally commissioned by a photographer from Surgères. Around 1890, the Norman Baron Maurice began extensive extension work, adding towers, balconies and a dovecote – a status symbol of wealth at the time. This was also when the park was laid out, with its imposing trees and ponds. At the beginning of the 20th century, the estate was purchased by Maurice Delmas, a member of an influential and wealthy family from La Rochelle, known for their shipping empire. Originally the land was intended purely for hunting, but thanks to the Delmas daughters, the Manoir was saved from demolition. The family used the property as a country retreat until 2017.

1860

A photographer from Surgères has a simple maison de maître built on the Plaisance property.

1890

A Norman baron named Maurice remodeled the house as we know it today. He made it twice as big and added towers, balconies and a dovecote. The larger the dovecote, the more status the owner amassed at the time. The dovecote is now part of the outbuilding, Maison de Gardien.

1895

After completing the renovation, the garden was also addressed by Baron Maurice. He created a landscape park in the English style, with many trees and water. The course of the water is still the same as it was then, as are some of the trees, which are therefore now more than 100 years old.

1905

At the beginning of the 20th century, the estate was purchased by Maurice Delmas, a member of an influential and wealthy family from La Rochelle, known for their shipping empire. It was purchased purely to increase their hunting grounds to a whopping 550 acres. At first they planned to demolish the house.

1940

During World War II, the house was occupied by both the Nazis and the French Resistance. After the war, the house returned to the hands of its rightful owner, still the Delmas family.

2017

The only remaining member of the Delmas family sold the estate to Ben and Michael, two Britons who began a thorough renovation. The house had barely been used as a second home for years, so there was a lot of work to do. The two manage to turn it into a beautiful B&B. Their work can still be admired today.

2024

After serving as a B&B for 7 seasons, Ben and Michael are selling the Manoir. A Dutch family purchases the property as a vacation home. Daniel, the youngest of the family, lives there permanently to maintain and host guests at the B&B when the family is not there.

The Manoir’s distinctive tower may be the first thing you notice as you drive down the driveway. Showing off the French flag, it gives a lot of character to the building. The inspiration for our logo.

Typical and beautifully designed French balconies give the front of the Manoir a stately, yet friendly and graceful look. All Chambres d’élégance have several of these French balconies, blending the outside and inside delightfully together.

Opulent dining room

The dining room features a large table no less than 4 meters long. Have your breakfast in style in this dining room with original fireplace and ensuite doors to the parlor.

Walls full of flowers

On all sides of the Manoir, the facade is overgrown with the most beautiful flowers. The cheerful colors of the roses, vine and other flowers give the Manoir that extra bit of French atmosphere.

The Park

5.5 hectare park

More than five acres of private parkland surround Manoir de Plaisance. With its water and trees, the grounds are a perfect breeding ground for healthy wildlife. While strolling the grounds, you’re bound to encounter our ducks and if you’re lucky many more, including deer, herons, beavers, cormorants and kingfishers.

Water plays an important role in the park. Therefore, the estate is located in a protected nature and wetland area. In the upper corner of the park is a small lake with its own water source. The lake feeds several ponds via a stream.

In the park you will find beautiful trees, large and small, green and bright. There are plenty of spots scattered around the grounds where you can sit quietly, for example, to read a book or have a nice chat over a glass of wine.

Every season has its own charms. Autumn is an extra special time, with trees displaying a beautiful array of colors.

The Pool

Saltwater pool

Saltwater pool

We have a large pool of 7 by 14 meters. It is a saltwater pool that produces its own chlorine. This has two big advantages for you: It smells less strong and it is milder for your skin, eyes, and bathing clothes. The pool is not heated, so it is open from the end of May to the end of September.

The large saltwater pool is located in a particularly quiet part of the park, away from the Manoir. Everything there is green and wooded. Privacy on top we call it.

Sunbeds & umbrellas

Thanks to the generous space around the pool, you will always find a quiet spot for yourself. There are sun beds and umbrellas waiting for you to enjoy the sun or shade quietly after your swim. Grab a delicious cold drink or ice cream from the pool house and relax!

Wildflowers

Wildflowers

We let the lawn around the pool grow and bloom. That means wildflowers are blooming, which is ideal for bees and insects. More flowers, more bees and more privacy. This method with wild flowers we apply in more places in the park.
